We travel to Kangaroo Island by ferry, which is operated by SeaLink. The ferry departs Cape Jervis on the South Australian mainland and travels to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Cape Jervis is around 1.5 hours drive south of Adelaide. The ferry trip across Backstairs Passage takes around 45 minutes.

The trip out to Cape Willoughby from Penneshaw takes around 30 minutes. It is a 28km trip along dirt on the Cape Willoughby Road. During August the road can be a bit wet, boggy, and slippery. And sometimes not passable in a conventional vehicle.
